Cultural Heritage (CH) represents a worldwide resource of inestimable value, attracting millions of visitors every year to monuments, museums, exhibitions and historical centres. Fundamental aspects of this resource to be enhanced are the promotion, the tutelage, the safeguard and people enjoyment.
In this direction, to create an intelligent CH that is attractive and sustainable, it is necessary to design and deploy ubiquitous and pervasive solutions within cultural environments such as museums, archaeological parks, historical centres, art exhibitions and so on.
The relationship between CH and new pervasive technologies and services has always been complex, dialectical and often inspired by the human desire to induce these spaces not created for that purpose, to pursue technological trends, eventually offering to the end-users devices and innovative technologies that could become a ”dead weight” during their cultural experiences.
The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm applied to the Cultural Heritage domain is a novel concept integrating intelligent objects, sensors, services and applications within static cultural places. The objective is to transform these spaces into Smart Cultural Heritage environments. The Internet of Cultural Things is an emerging discipline aims to design a novel fruition, tutelage and promotion models of the Cultural Heritage in the worldwide.
The designed and developed IoT systems will be able to be pervasive and ubiquitous with the definitive goal of rethinking CH in terms of sustainability, enrichment and valorisation towards the future generations. Furthermore, the Internet of Cultural Things can provide greater efficiency in the coordination of processes and facilitate the development of new activities that can generate economic returns.
The purpose of the proposed Special Issue of Future Generation Computer Systems is to publish the most recent advances of Internet of Things applied to the Cultural Heritage domain, with emphasis on the following aspects, but certainly without limitation to them:

Papers submitted to this special issue must be original and must not be under consideration for publication in any other journal, conference, or workshop.
To solicit papers, we will advertise the call on mailing lists and send to particular colleagues working in the areas related to this special issue to invite good quality submissions.
Authors should prepare their papers according to Guide for Authors of FGCS. Papers will be submitted via the EES website (http://ees.elsevier.com/fgcs/). To ensure that the manuscript is correctly identified for inclusion into the special issue, authors must select \"SI: IoCT Towards a Smart CH\" when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process.
