Blockchain is not a buzzword anymore; instead, it is truly a radical innovation that has the potential to disrupt nearly every industry and societies in this world (Frizzo-Barker et al., 2020). Gartner estimates blockchain technology is accelerating at a fast pace which will deliver business value of over $3 trillion by 2030 (Gartner, 2019). Blockchain is a tamper-resistant online-distributed ledger that “keeps track of every transaction that has ever occurred” (Tapscott & Tapscott, 2016; p. 7). Consequently, there is no single central authority or server controlling the blockchain. Bitcoin, the popular cryptocurrency, was the first application of blockchain technology. The main idea behind the development of Bitcoin was to develop a distributed payment transaction system that enables highly secure and fast payments between a sender and receiver without the need for financial intermediaries (e.g., VISA, Mastercard, Banks) (Nakamoto, 2008).



Though initially the use of blockchain technology was highlighted primarily in the financial sector, over time scholars have suggested its applications across industries and wide-ranging contexts, such as the operations and supply chain management (Akter, Michael, Uddin, McCarthy, & Rahman, 2020; Wamba & Queiroz, 2020), the energy sector (Kang et al., 2017), land record management (Thakur, Doja, Dwivedi, Ahmad, & Khadanga, 2020), vaccine management (Yong et al., 2019), Internet-of-things (IoT) (Huh, Cho, & Kim, 2017), airlines (Ying, Jia, & Du, 2018), government enterprises (Warkentin & Orgeron, 2020), United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) (Hughes et al., 2019), and humanitarian supply chain settings, such as disaster relief operations (Dubey, Gunasekaran, Bryde, Dwivedi, & Papadopoulos, 2020). Schuetz and Venkatesh (2020) indicate that blockchain could promote financial inclusion among people in rural areas, especially in emerging countries such as India. Hughes et al. (2019) further identify several potential blockchain applications and barriers to blockchain adoption. However, despite the number of use cases, the implementation of blockchain remains limited in practice (Behnke & Janssen, 2020).



Moreover, scholars have only recently begun to examine this information technology (IT) artifact within the realm of information systems (IS) (Rossi, Mueller-Bloch, Thatcher, & Beck, 2019). Therefore, there is a lack of theoretical and empirical research within the IS discipline with a focus on blockchain technology. We still do not have sufficient understanding of individual, organizational, societal, and national-level factors that may play a significant role in the adoption of blockchain technology across a myriad of industries. There is also a need to incorporate permissioned (i.e., private) and permission-less (public) dimensions of blockchain in IS research. The potential of blockchain technology is enormous and it is the responsibility of IS researchers to unpack the phenomenon of blockchain technology.



The primary purpose of this special issue call is to invite theoretically grounded and empirically rigorous research on blockchain technology within the IS context. The proposed Special Section is targeted at (but not restricted to) the following topics:



· Governance of blockchain applications



· Societal impact of blockchain technology



· The use of blockchain in public sector



· The impact of blockchain technology on organizational governance



· Development of organizational level blockchain capability for competitive advantage



· The role of national and organizational cultures in the adoption of blockchain technology



· Incorporating blockchain technology into organizational strategy



· Utilizing blockchain technology with other emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and big data analytics capability



· Barriers to blockchain adoption



· Public versus private blockchains



· New theories around blockchain technology



· Use of blockchain applications for illegal purposes



· Trust in blockchain applications



· The role of blockchain in financial inclusion and empowering individuals in emerging economies

Submission Guidelines



All submissions have to be prepared according to the Guide for Authors as published in the Journal’s website at: https://www.elsevier.com/journals/international-journal-of-information-management/0268-4012/guide-for-authors



Authors should select “SI: Blockchain in IS”, from the “Choose Article Type” pull- down menu during the submission process. A submission based on one or more papers that appeared elsewhere must bear major value-added extensions or updates (at least 50% of new material). Authors are requested to attach to the submitted paper their relevant, previously published articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal’s version.



All submitted papers will undergo a rigorous peer-review process that will consider programmatic relevance, scientific quality, significance, originality, style and clarity.



The acceptance process will focus on papers that address original contributions in the form of theoretical, empirical and case research, leading to new perspectives on Blockchain in Information Systems.
