Special Issue Call for Papers

Underwater communications is a field that has its first registered experiments in the early XIX century, in the lakes near Geneva. The XX century has seen the development of theoretical tools and practical systems oriented towards military, resource mining, and food harvesting. This topic has received renewed interest as of lately thanks to the advances in wireless technologies, which lead us to envision a future where myriads of devices could populate the oceans for environmental preservation, recreation and, who knows, even habitation.However, still many challenges are unsolved, without which, the capacity of communications in this medium is severely constrained. The goal of true real-time communications is unfulfilled, and the commercial systems are stuck in point-to-point communication. Not only communications are important, sensing technologies that help find new resources or detect submerged hazards must be improved. For example, initiatives are ongoing for detailed mapping of extensive areas of the seabed, but the amount of time they require and the cost must be decreased. The ongoing scientific efforts will be invaluable for other scientific fields such as geology or biology, which today rely on scattered data obtained in limited locations or limited periods of time.In this context, this special issue solicits research papers that address new technologies and challenges in underwater communications technologies that would advance the frontier of knowledge and support future activities in the oceans.
