In 2020, with the release and commercial use of 5G and WiFi 6, mobile Internet has entered a new development cycle. Internet of things (IoTs) is regarded as one of the most important scenarios of wireless network in the near future. It can be predicted that there will be massive devices connected to the mobile Internet through wireless communication. On the one hand, since the application scenarios of the Internet of things are quite wide, such as telemedicine, industrial control, smart home, smart city, hand-held wear, virtual reality, and etc., more diversified technologies are needed to provide efficient solutions. On the other hand, there are many industrial standards of the Internet of things such as NB-IoT, LoRa, IEEE 802.11p, LTE-v, IEEE 802.11bd. How to promote the standardization process and explore the relationship between different standards is also a tricky challenge. Wireless network and communication technology is one of the most important driving forces for the development of Internet of things, so the research of 6G and the next generation WiFi provides conditions for of Internet of things technology. Therefore, the special issue focuses on the emerging technologies for the next generation IoT.

Dr. Changle Li received the Ph.D. degree in communication and information system from Xidian University, China, in 2005. He conducted his postdoctoral research in Canada and the National Institute of information and Communications Technology, Japan, respectively. He had been a Visiting Scholar with the University of Technology Sydney and is currently a Professor with the State Key Laboratory of Integrated Services Networks, Xidian University. His research interests include intelligent transportation systems, vehicular networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks.

Dr. Yong Fang received his BEng, MEng, and PhD degrees from the School of Telecommunications Engineering, Xidian University, Xi’an, China, in 2000, 2003, and 2005, respectively. Then he was a lecturer/postdoc-fellow for one year in the School of Electronics and Information Engineering, Northwestern Polytechnic University, Xi’an, China. From 2007 to 2008, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, as a research professor. From 2009 to 2016, he was a full professor with the College of Information Engineering, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi, China. Since 2017, he is a full professor with the School of Information Engineering, Chang'an University, Xian, Shaanxi, China. His research interests include coding technique and theory, deep learning, compressed sensing, intelligent transportation systems, image/video coding, processing, and transmission, etc. He had a long experience in hardware development, e.g. FPGA-based (Xilinx Vertex series) video codec design, DSP-based (TI C64 series) video surveillance system, etc. He was an associate editor of the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. He is now an editor of the IEEE Communications Letters.
