Recent technologies, such as IoT, social networks, cloud computing, and data analytics, create a huge amount of data. However, for this data to be used to its full power, security and privacy are critical. Data security and privacy have been widely investigated over the past years. However, today we face new issues in securing and protecting data, that result in new challenging research directions. Some of these challenges arise from the increasing privacy concerns with respect to the use of such data, and from the need of reconciling privacy with the use of data. Other challenges arise regarding the deployments of new data collection and processing devices, such as those used in IoT systems, which cuse security concerns.
In this special issue, we discuss relevant concepts and approaches for Big Data security and privacy, and identify research challenges to be addressed to achieve comprehensive solutions. The purpose is to make security and privacy communities realize the challenges and tasks that we face in Big Data. We focus on exploring the security and privacy aspects of Big Data as supporting and indispensable elements of the emerging Big Data research.
The areas of interest include:
New papers, or extended versions of papers presented at related conferences, are welcome. Submissions must not be currently under review for publication elsewhere. Conference papers may be submitted only if they are substantially extended (more than 50%), and must be referenced. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed using the normal standards of CAEE, and accepted based on quality, originality, novelty, and relevance to the theme of the special section. By submitting a paper to this issue, the authors agree to referee one paper (if asked) within the time frame of the special issue.

Guest Editors’ short biography:
Marimuthu Karuppiah received his B.E. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai, India in 2003, M.E. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, India in 2005, Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from VIT University, Vellore, India in 2015. Presently, he is a Professor in Department of Computing Science and Engineering, SRM University, Delhi-NCR, India. Before joining SRMIST, he was with the VIT University, Vellore, India as an Associate Professor. He has published more than 30 research papers in SCI indexed journals. Also, he has published more than 40 research papers in SCOPUS indexed journals and international conferences. He is a life member of Cryptology Research Society of India (CRSI) and Computer Society of India (CSI), senior member of IEEE and member of ACM. His main research interests include cryptography and wireless network security, in particular, authentication and encryption schemes.
Shehzad Ashraf Chaudhry received the master’s and Ph.D. degrees (with Distinction) from International Islamic University Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2009 and 2016, respectively. He is currently working as an Associate Professor with the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Istanbul Gelisim University, Istanbul, Turkey. He has authored over 100 scientific publications appeared in different international journals and proceedings, like: IEEE IoT Journal, IEEE Transactions on Reliability, IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, IEEE Systems Journal, IEEE Access, ElsevierFuture Generation Computer Systems, Computer Communications, IET Communications, Security and communication networks, Electronic Commerce Research, Peer to Peer Networking and Applications, IEEE DASC 2015, RACS 2015 etc. With an H-index of 24, i-10 index of 49 and 76 WoS publications on my credit, my work has been cited more than 1800 times. He has also supervised over 35 graduate students in their research. In addition to his research interests, he occasionally writes on issues of higher education in Pakistan. Dr. Chaudhry was a recipient of the Gold Medal for achieving 4.0/4.0 CGPA in his Masters. Considering his research, Pakistan Council for Science and Technology granted him the Prestigious Research Productivity Award, while affirming him among Top Productive Computer Scientist in Pakistan. He has served as a TPC member of various international conferences and is an Active Reviewer of many ISI indexed journals.
Mohammed H. Alsharif received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering (communication and control) from the Islamic University of Gaza, Palestine, in 2008, and the M.Sc.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering (wireless communication and networking) from the National University of Malaysia, Malaysia, in 2012 and 2015, respectively. He joined Sejong University, South Korea, in 2016, where he is currently an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electrical Engineering. His current research interests include wireless communications and networks, including wireless communications, network information theory, the Internet of Things (IoT), green communication, energy-efficient wireless transmission techniques, wireless power transfer, and wireless energy harvesting.
