Special Issue Call for Papers

The Global South (GS), a term both contested and misunderstood, has received renewed attention today. Collaboration among stakeholders representing—or claiming allegiance (e.g., China) to—the GS, is on the rise. The velocity and scope of business-to-business (B2B), sectoral, and industry collaboration prompts new modes of cooperation and new ways of thinking about the GS. A new subtle balance of power and influence in the GS permeates business and politics. In a number of ways, e.g., due to the FDI and GVC channels, the ‘Global North’ is influenced by these developments too. Certainly, there is more to it than that. The inroads of the broadly defined AI and the promises it bears will accelerate processes and developments already throbbing in the GS.

In the debate on AI, the question of whether it will be a source of good is vital. In the context of the GS, one key concern is associated with the ‘first mover advantage’. Here, the point is that the Global North, to use the aggregate term, might be able to capture the opportunities first, effectively denying them to actors in the GS. This might lead to exclusion and reproduction of the old global dependency patterns. The hypothesis upon which this special issue builds is that this approach to AI and its likely impact on the GS is Eurocentric because it downplays the developments and tremendous progress attained over in recent years in the GS itself. From a different angle, the same approach commits the fallacy of treating AI as an ontologically coherent entity, thus ignoring the fact that, for instance, neural networks are language- and culture-sensitive.

Infusing these two sets of points, i.e., GS and AI, into the IM debate is likely to offer a hint of new insights into the broad, and yet so relevant question, of what happens—and to what extent—at the intersection of AI-enhanced IM and GS. There are several overlapping layers within which this issue unfolds, and several ways of looking and examining it, including at the micro-level (the business sector, including B2B), the mezzo-level (industries and sectors of the economy), and the macro-level (regional and global patterns of collaboration). The objective of this special issue is to bring these perspectives together and showcase how the respective developments impact the field of information management.

The editors of this special issue encourage submissions that address, but are not limited to, the issues and topics listed below. Please note that the editors will not consider submissions that are technical in nature. The focus and consideration will be given to papers that, whilst theory-based, offer empirical insights into the issues under consideration.
