On June 08, 2026, Research.com released its fifth edition report recognizing the world's leading biology scientists and their contributions to scientific research. The ranking aims to increase the online visibility of researchers whose work continues to advance knowledge across biological sciences and related disciplines.

This report also serves as a resource for students, academic institutions, businesses, government agencies, and research organizations seeking experts for collaboration, consultation, and research initiatives. By highlighting highly ranked scientists from around the world, the ranking provides insight into current research trends and the individuals helping shape the future of biology.

For the 2026 edition, our research team analyzed approximately 19,700 scientist profiles from around the globe. Data was collected from OpenAlex, CrossRef, and other trusted scholarly databases. We applied a consistent evaluation methodology that considered research output, citation impact, academic achievements, and career contributions to identify the scientists included in this year's ranking.

The latest milestones in biology and biochemistry research

Biology research continues to advance through new developments in RNA-based vaccines. One recent breakthrough, called RNAx (based on nucleocytoplasmic transport modulation), was designed to make RNA vaccines easier for the body to tolerate while still keeping them effective. Instead of focusing solely on strengthening the immune response, this approach helps “calm down” some of the early immune responses that often cause side effects after vaccination. At the same time, it allows the vaccine to produce its target proteins more efficiently inside cells. This means the body experiences fewer short-term reactions like inflammation signals, while still building a strong defense against diseases.

Researchers have also made progress in large-scale biological data analysis and drug discovery. One major development is SOAR (Spatial transcriptOmics Analysis Resource), a platform that organizes and analyzes spatial transcriptomics data, which shows how genes are expressed in different locations within tissues. By bringing together thousands of samples from multiple species, tissue types, and technologies into a single system, SOAR helps scientists better understand how cells behave in their natural tissue environment.

Using this platform, researchers uncovered patterns in immune cells within tumor environments, offering new clues about how the immune system interacts with cancer. SOAR also helped identify existing drugs with new therapeutic uses, including potential candidates for cancer treatment and for inflammatory diseases like ulcerative colitis.

  • Scientists based in the United States lead the ranking, with 585 researchers in the top 1,000, maintaining a strong global lead.
  • European countries remain highly represented, with Germany (68), the United Kingdom (57), and France (20.
  • Guido Kroemer from Université Paris Cité, France, ranks 1st globally in this edition, with a Discipline H-index of 307.
  • Harvard University remains the leading institution, with 51 scientists in the top 1,000.
  • The average Discipline H-index for the top 1% of scientists is 259.7, compared to 131.04 for the full top 1,000.

Countries with the highest number of leading biology and biochemistry scientists

The United States remains the clear leader in biology and biochemistry research, with 585 scientists ranked among the top 1,000 in 2026. While this marks a decline from 620 scientists in the 2025 ranking, the country continues to maintain a substantial lead over all other nations. Germany holds second place with 68 scientists, improving from 65 in the previous year, while the United Kingdom moves to third with 57 scientists, up slightly from 56.

Japan remains among the leading countries with 56 scientists, increasing from 53 in 2025. Australia also strengthened its position, rising from 24 to 28 scientists. Canada retained sixth place with 24 scientists, an increase from 22 the previous year. Together, these countries continue to demonstrate strong research output and international influence in the biological sciences.

Several countries in the lower half of the top ten recorded gains in 2026. France increased from 18 to 20 scientists, while China rose from 18 to 20 scientists and moved ahead in the rankings. Switzerland reported 18 scientists, down from 20 in 2025, and Belgium entered the top ten with 17 scientists. 

Overall, the latest rankings show continued concentration of leading biology and biochemistry researchers in North America, Europe, and East Asia, although the composition of the top-performing countries continues to evolve from year to year.

Please note that the country associated with a scientist is based on the affiliated research institution according to MAG, not on their actual nationality.

Institutions with the highest number of leading scientists

Harvard University continues to hold the top position in the 2026 ranking, with 51 scientists represented among the world's top biology and biochemistry researchers. Although Harvard remains the leading institution, its total declined from 60 scientists in 2025. 

The University of California, San Diego strengthened its position in second place with 28 scientists, up from 26 last year. Stanford University and the National Institutes of Health follow with 21 scientists each, while the University of California, San Francisco also recorded 21 scientists, down from 25 in the previous ranking.

Several institutions saw notable movement within the top 10. The Max Planck Society increased from 18 to 19 scientists, while the University of Pennsylvania rose from 15 to 17. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center remains among the leading institutions with 17 scientists, compared to 19 in 2025. Scripps Research Institute and the University of Washington complete the top 10 with 14 scientists each.

U.S. institutions continue to dominate the rankings, accounting for the vast majority of organizations in the top 20. However, leading international institutions maintain a strong presence, including the Max Planck Society in Germany, KU Leuven in Belgium, and the University of Tokyo in Japan. 

MIT and Columbia University each recorded 13 scientists, while Yale University and the University of California, Los Angeles had 12. The continued representation of institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia reflects the global nature of high-impact biology and biochemistry research.

Redefining scientific training through online universities

Recent research shows that distance learning is reshaping access to and enrollment in higher education, especially as online universities continue to expand their global reach. A post-COVID-19 enrollment study found that a 1% increase in the distance education rate is associated with about 7,964 additional college students, highlighting how strongly online learning participation influences enrollment growth, as supported by many online universities.

The study also found that the impact became even stronger after the pandemic, reaching a combined effect of around 9,361 additional students. However, this relationship is not linear—its positive effect weakens as distance education becomes more widespread, showing diminishing returns at higher adoption levels.

Researchers identified clear thresholds at which the impact begins to decline: 91% adoption without COVID-19 and 67% during COVID-19. These limits are especially relevant for online universities, which rely heavily on scalable digital learning systems but face natural constraints as adoption increases.

H-index ranking—leaders, averages, and distribution

For Europe, the top position in the region is held by Professor Guido Kroemer of Université Paris Cité in France, who also ranks 1st globally in this dataset. His Discipline H-index is 307, placing him at the highest level among all listed scientists.

In North America, the leading scientist is Professor Solomon H. Snyder of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the United States. He ranks 2nd globally and 1st in the region, with a Discipline H-index of 283.

Asia is led by Professor Barry Halliwell from the National University of Singapore, where he records a Discipline H-index of 212.

For Oceania, Professor Robert G. Parton of the University of Queensland in Australia represents the region’s top scientist. He ranks 107th globally and has a Discipline H-index of 161.

The Middle East is represented by Professor Benjamin Geiger of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, with a Discipline H-index of 138. 

In South America, Professor João Rocha from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria in Brazil leads the region with a Discipline H-index of 116.

The average Discipline H-index for the top 1% of scientists in the top 1,000 ranking is 259.7, compared to an overall average of 131.04 across the full dataset.

The average number of published articles for the top 1% of scientists in the ranking is 1,094.5, while the overall average stands at 560.5 for the full top 1,000 group.

The average number of citations for the top 1% of scientists is 308,583.4, compared to 76,458.05 for the entire ranking population.
